Bathroom Renovations for Dapto Family Homes

Dapto is family-home country. Most bathrooms here are in brick veneer houses from the seventies to the nineties, and they're working hard for a household that's bigger than the room.

The Dapto house

Dapto, along with Horsley, Kanahooka, Koonawarra and Brownsville, is the south of the Wollongong area's big family-home belt. Most of its housing went up from the seventies through the nineties:

  • Brick veneer homes on slabs, single storey and some two storey
  • A main bathroom with a bath and shower
  • An ensuite in many houses from the eighties onward
  • A separate toilet
  • A laundry off the garage or kitchen

Newer estates to the west have added more recent homes, with bathrooms that are younger but often fitted out at a basic level.

Family bathrooms under pressure

In a house with three or four kids, one main bathroom does a lot of work. The usual complaints:

  • The morning queue. One shower, one basin, one toilet in a separate room.
  • Nowhere to put anything. A single cupboard vanity and a mirror.
  • A bath that's only used by the littlest kids, taking up half the room.
  • Mould on the ceiling from lots of showers and not enough ventilation.
  • A leaking shower after decades of use.

What Dapto renovations tend to include

Main bathroom

  • Keep a bath if there are young kids, but a smaller one, maybe inside the shower area
  • A bigger shower with a fixed glass panel
  • A double vanity or a long single one with two sets of drawers
  • A bigger mirror cabinet
  • Tiles to the ceiling and a fan ducted outside
  • A durable, non-slip floor

Ensuite

  • Shower base out, tiled floor with a linear drain
  • Frameless glass instead of a pivot door
  • Shallow vanity with drawers

Separate toilet

Keeping the toilet in its own room is usually the right call in a busy family home. It's worth updating at the same time: new toilet, tiles, fan and a small hand basin if there's room.

Working with the slab

Dapto homes are mostly on slabs. Moving a shower or toilet waste means cutting concrete, which adds cost and time. In most houses the existing layout is sensible, so the money goes further on fixtures and finishes.

Planning for later

Families move through stages. A bathroom renovated now might be used by teenagers in ten years and by the same owners in their seventies after that. Blocking in the walls for grab rails, a step-free shower and a non-slip floor add very little now and save a lot later. See accessible bathrooms.

Asbestos in older homes

Houses from the seventies and eighties may have asbestos in eaves, wet-area linings or under floor tiles. Anything from before about 1990 is tested before strip-out.

Newer homes in West Dapto

Newer houses in the western growth areas usually don't need structural work. The typical renovation is replacing basic fittings, swapping a framed screen for frameless glass, upgrading the vanity and fixing any early leaks. If the house is still within statutory warranty periods and something's defective, raise it with the builder first.

FAQs

Questions people ask before they commit

What does a bathroom renovation cost in Dapto?

As a 2026 guide, a family main bathroom runs about $20,000 to $33,000 and an ensuite $15,000 to $25,000. Doing both in one program usually costs less per room than doing them separately.

Can a Dapto bathroom be renovated without moving the plumbing?

Yes, and on a slab that's usually the best-value approach. The bath can become a shower on the same waste, the vanity can change completely, and the room can look brand new without cutting concrete.

Our house is fairly new. Why is the bathroom already looking tired?

Newer project homes often come with entry-level fittings, framed screens and basic vanities that date quickly. If there are defects like a leaking shower, check whether they fall within statutory warranty periods before renovating.
